Target Audience: Students

Grade Level: K-4,5-8

Event Focus : What forces of flight determine how an airplane flies?

Description:

***THIS EVENT HAS BEEN FILLED, PLEASE LOOK FOR NEXT MONTH'S LESSON*****

If we were not able to accommodate your request, you may still be able to use the materials listed below to guide your students in a fun, educational activity.

Students will build a glider out of a foam plate.  They will use this gilder to investigate the forces of flight.  The presenter will use resources from the Exploring Aeronautics CD, video and models to demonstrate the forces on a plane that allows it to fly.

The event will be presented only on March 9, 2009 at 8:30 PST.  If you would like register, please email Greg Pitzer (gregory.e.pitzer@nasa.gov) with your name, school's name, and grade level. Or you can sign up on-line for a later day and make a comment for us to change the date to March 9.  Please be sure that you are registered previously in our database.

Instructional Objectives:

  • Determine the forces involved in flight
  • Investigate the role of elevons and rudder.
  • Determine what configuration of controls is required to steer the glider.
